4 Ways to Test Your Computer's Random Access Memory (RAM)

Memory (RAM)

Memory (RAM)

It is worth checking the RAM sticks for errors from time to time. Or if you really suspect that there is some problem with her. For example, the computer does not boot, restart for no apparent reason, and similar horrors.

This post has compiled utilities that work with Windows, macOS, and Linux. So you can quickly understand if there is a problem with the RAM, regardless of the computer OS.

MemTest86

This utility has several important advantages: it is free, starts from a flash drive, is easy to use, supports up to 64 GB of RAM, and is trusted by experts.

For testing, you need to download MemTest86 from the official site, save it to a USB drive, and then simply restart the computer by starting from it. This is cool because it doesn't matter what OS is on your computer.

The basic version of the utility is free, and you won’t need the paid one if you are not an iron manufacturer.

Windows Memory Diagnostic

Of the pluses, it is worth highlighting: passing tests in a fully automatic mode, the developer is Microsoft, you can use it for free. But there are also disadvantages: it has not been updated for a long time, it only supports up to 4 GB of RAM.

Windows Memory Diagnostic will help you run a series of tests to identify problems with your RAM. To work, you need to install the utility and follow its instructions to create a bootable floppy disk, ISO, disk, or flash drive.

After downloading, the application will automatically start testing and continue until you stop it yourself.

Despite its name, Windows Memory Diagnostic does not only work with Windows.

Memtest86+

This is a completely free and more recent port of MemTest86, which I wrote about above.

You can run the utility from a disk or a bootable USB flash drive. Everything works similarly to the original application. Windows, Mac, and Linux are supported.

DocMemory Diagnostic

Like its counterparts, this is a free utility, but it only works when started from a floppy disk. As a result, DocMemory Diagnostic should be used if all other options have not helped. Otherwise, everything is similar to the previous applications.
